Pneumatology

Deity: I believe that the Holy Spirit as the third person of the Trinity is one with and equal to the Father and Son.  Acts 5:3-4; II Corinthians 3:18; Hebrews 9:14; John 14:26; I Corinthians 12:11; I John 5:6; Luke 1:35-37; Psalm 139: 7-10; Matthew 3:16-17; Matthew 28:19; II Corinthians 13:14; I John 5:7; II Timothy 3:16-17; II Peter 1

 OT Ministry:

  • He was active at creation: Genesis 1:1-3
  • He was the primary Agent of inspiration: II Peter 1:16-21
  • He came upon believers in a theocratic anointing for special tasks of service: Judges 6:23; Exodus 31:22,23; Judges 13:25; I Samuel 16:13
  • He is the One who stirs up the hearts of men Ezra: 1:1, 5; 5:1-2; 6:22; 7:27-28, Nehemiah 2:1, 12, Esther
  • He orders our steps and the events of our lives: Proverbs 16:9; 3:5-6; Psalm 37:5, 23

 General Ministry:

  • He is the Illuminator of the Word of God: Ps 119:18
  • He is the One who stirs up the hearts of men Ezra 1:1, 5; 5:1-2; 6:22; 7:27-28, Nehemiah 2:1, 12, Esther
  • He orders our steps and the events of our lives Proverbs 16:9; 3:5-6; Psalm 37:5, 23
  • He gives strength to His people in His work: Zechariah 4:6-10
  • He uses believers to teach His word: Romans 10:14-16
  • He brings conviction of sin, righteousness, and judgment to the unbeliever John 16:8-11; 15:26, 27
  • He brings conviction, or convinces the hearts of His people.
  • He produces fruit in the lives of believers that evidences the new birth and a spirit-filled life: II Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 5:22-23; John 15:5
  • He assists us in prayer: Romans 8:26-27

  • He bears witness to the new birth in the heart of the believer: Romans 8
  • He is grieved when the believer presumptuously sins against Him: Ephesians 4:30

Sealing and Baptism: I believe that the Holy Spirit seals the believer at the moment of conversion as a son for all eternity when he is baptized or placed into the body of Christ. Romans 5-6; I Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 4:30; I Corinthians 3:16; I Corinthians 6:19

Filling: It is not a charismatic gift, second blessing, or life now free from the battles with indwelling sin, but a description of a believer’s growth in progressive sanctification as he submits himself to the Sprit’s influence through the Word of God. This filling is demonstrated by a life characterized by spiritual fruit. John 15; Galatians 5; Colossians 3:12-15; Ephesians 5:18

Gifting: The Sprit of God gave gifts to the church as a demonstration of His triumph over Satan, for the edification of the church, for the authentication of the Word of God, and as a sign to the unbelieving Jew that their generation was under Divine judgment and that the Gospel message was for the Gentiles as well as for the Jews. Ephesians 4; Romans 12; I Corinthians 12-14

Tongues: I believe that tongues was a temporary gift that ceased in AD 70. This gift allowed believers to speak in a known language unknown them as a sign to unbelieving Jews that they were a generation under the judgment of God and that the message of the Gospel was for the Gentiles as well as the Jews. I Corinthians 12-14; 14:21; Isaiah 28:9-19; progression of the Gospel message in the book of Acts
