Is Jesus God? What kind of Messiah did the Old Testament Prophets Predict? Broadcast

Stephen to Joel: Why is this topic important?

  • Receiving Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah is an essential part of the gospel message.
  • The New Testament says that Jesus is God.
  • Jesus of Nazareth received worship from men.
  • Christians have worshipped Jesus of Nazareth as God from the beginning of the church.
  • Jesus of Nazareth made statements that only God has the right to make.
  • Jesus of Nazareth was crucified because the Jews accused Him of making Himself equal with God.
  • Only God has the right to get glory in our salvation, not someone who is just a man.

Stephen to Victor: How does this question fit with last week’s discussion?

  • There is only one God: Deuteronomy 6:4 The LORD our God is one LORD: Exodus 20:3 You shall have no other gods before Me.  Isaiah 46:9 I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me.
  • God is referred to in the plural: Genesis 1:26 God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. Genesis 3:22 The LORD God said, man has become like one of Us. Genesis 11:7 Let Us go down and confuse their language. Isaiah 6:8 Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?
  • There is a distinction between Father and Son: Malachi 3:1 I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, says the LORD of hosts.
  • Distinction between Father, Son, and Spirit: Isaiah 48:16 I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; From the time that it was, I was there. And now the Lord GOD and His Spirit Have sent Me.  Hosea 1:7 I will have mercy on the house of Judah, will save them by the LORD their God.

Stephen to Eric: What did the Old Testament Prophets say about the Messiah?

  • His name means God with us: Isaiah 7:14 The Lord himself shall give you a sign…a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
  • He is called the mighty God: Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a child is born…and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God.
  • He is called Jehovah and God: Isaiah 40:3-11 The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the LORD; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God.  The glory of the LORD shall be revealed, And all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken…Say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God!  Behold, the Lord GOD.
  • He is called the only God and Jehovah: Isaiah 44:6 Thus says the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
  • He is called Jehovah, yet distinct in person from someone else called Jehovah: Isaiah 48:16 I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, I was there. And now the Lord GOD and His Spirit Have sent Me

Stephen to Joel: Where there any other prophets who said the same thing?

  • The Messiah who will be the person through which Israel is saved is called Jehovah: Hosea 1:7 I will have mercy on the house of Judah, will save them by the LORD their God.
  • The Messiah who will be pierced is called Jehovah: Zechariah 12:7-10 The LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem…they shall look upon me whom they have pierced.
  • The Messiah is who will be Israel’s good shepherd is Jehovah: Ezekiel 34:10-27 Thus says the Lord GOD…I will both search my sheep, and seek them out…and feed them upon the mountains of Israel…I will feed my flock, says the Lord GOD.  I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick…and I the LORD will be their God, and they shall know that I am the LORD.
  • The Messiah is Jehovah and will have a forerunner: Malachi 3:1 I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, says the LORD of hosts.
  • The Messiah who is Jehovah is called the King of glory: Psalm 24:7 Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.  Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty– he is the King of glory. Selah
  • The Messiah is called God with an eternal dominion: Psalm 45:4-7 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the scepter of thy kingdom is a right scepter.
  • The Messiah is called Jehovah and God interchangeably through this passage: Psalm 68:16-35 The LORD will dwell in Jerusalem for ever…the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place.  Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.   Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah.  He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto GOD the Lord belong the issues from death.  But God shall wound the head of his enemies, and the hairy scalp of such an one as goeth on still in his trespasses.  The Lord said, I will bring again from Bashan, I will bring my people again from the depths of the sea: That thy foot may be dipped in the blood of thine enemies, and the tongue of thy dogs in the same.  They have seen thy goings, O God; even the goings of my God, my King, in the sanctuary.  The singers went before, the players on instruments followed after; among them were the damsels playing with timbrels.  Bless ye God in the congregations, even the Lord, from the fountain of Israel…Thy God hath commanded thy strength: strengthen, O God, that which thou hast wrought for us.  Because of thy temple at Jerusalem shall kings bring presents unto thee. Rebuke the company of spearmen, the multitude of the bulls, with the calves of the people, till every one submit himself with pieces of silver: scatter thou the people that delight in war. Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God. Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the Lord; Selah: To him that rideth upon the heavens of heavens, which were of old; lo, he doth send out his voice, and that a mighty voice. Ascribe ye strength unto God: his excellency is overIsrael, and his strength is in the clouds. O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places: the God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. Blessed be God.

Stephen to Eric: What are your concluding thoughts?

  • Clearly, the Old Testament taught that the Messiah would be Jehovah God in human flesh.
  • It is impossible to be a Christian and reject the deity of Christ: John 8:24 If you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.
  • If you have doubted the deity of Christ, repent of your unbelief and trust in Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah/God in flesh.
